Chemical Formula: FeTiO. 3. Locality: Ilmen Mountains, southern Urals, of the Russia. Name Origin: Named after It's locality. Ilmenite is the titanium-iron oxide mineral with the idealized formula FeTiO. 3. It is a weakly magnetic black or steel-gray solid. From the commercial perspective, ilmenite is the most important ore of titanium.

A supposed cubic form of ilmenite. Originally described from Jizerská meadow (Iser meadow), Jizerské Mts (Iser Mts), Liberec Region, Bohemia (Böhmen; Boehmen), Czech Republic. A Mg-Cr-bearing variety from DeBeers mine (kimberlites), associated, i.a., with hawthorneite. A ferrian magnesian variety of ilmenite.

Physical Properties Of Ilmenite. Ilmenite is a black mineral found in mafic igneous rocks and pegmatites. It belongs to the iron titanium oxide minerals group, which also includes rutile, anatase, brookite, and perovskite. Ilmenite has a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale, making it durable enough for use as an abrasive or gemstone polish.

Table 1 presents basic information about ilmenite properties (rutile properties are also provided for a comparison), and Fig. 2 shows the crystal structure of ilmenite. The theoretical TiO 2 content in ilmenite is 52.7% and the specific gravity of ilmenite is high (ilmenite is considered to be a heavy mineral with the specific gravity of about 5). Fig. 2 …

Ilmenite is a titanium-iron oxide mineral with the idealized formula FeTiO. 3. It is a weakly magnetic black or steel-gray solid. Ilmenite is the most important ore of titanium [5] and the main source of titanium dioxide, which is used in paints, inks, [6] fabrics, plastics, paper, sunscreen, food and cosmetics. ilmenite. ilmenite ĭlˈmĕnīt [ key], black mineral, iron titanium oxide, FeTiO 3, crystallizing in the hexagonal system. It is sometimes found as tabular hexagonal crystals but occurs more commonly as small grains in igneous and metamorphic rocks and in sands derived from them. Ilmenite has been noted as an important constituent of lunar rocks.
